Hide Specific Department From Department Menu in Navision RTC

Hi all,

Today i came across a different type of query, where my client who is using Navision 2009 R2 RTC Client. He wanted to only Role specific jobs to all his users.

Yeah we have a hotfix for the same which can hide department button from the Role Center page and user can only see the task that he need to perform.

* Detail of the hotfix for hiding department from RTC can be found in this post.

But the query was that he don't want to hide the whole department button from the role center page. What he wanted that Users other than finance and Administration can only see all other department than these two.

He only wanted to hide Administration and Finance Menu from Department.

Unfortunately microsoft have no hotfix for the issue, so i created a suggestion for the same at Microsoft connect. If you think that this is importany than vote for it here. We will find it in new release of navision.

But while exploring this option i figured out that if the user wants to hide these two options from the department menu for all users than it can be done.

Lets see how we can do that. Lets go to classic client and design the RTC menusuit. Right click on the menu which you dont want to see. Select hide from Designer and save the menusuit.

Compile and save the menusuit and start RTC and click on Department tab. you will not find menu over there as shown in image below.

All about ZUP file in Navision

Hi all,
Most of time we heard that this problem in navision can be resolved by deleting ZUP file, lets see what is it and where it is stored.

What is ZUP file?
The Dynamics NAV ZUP file is used to store the user setup and preferences for the current session so that they are "remembered" for the next session.

What operations can be performed on ZUP file?
The ZUP file can not be edited but it can be deleted.

Where ZUP file is stored in windows XP or windows 7 ?
In Windows XP, zup file is stored in - C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data.
In Windows 7, zup file is stored in - C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming.

Navision RTC How to place the Actions in the pages to new category

Hi all,

Instead of placing the actions in the standard categories like New, Process and Report, you can also place your action to your own categories.

The following steps will show the process with an example:

1) In the object designer, design the page 30 Item Card.
2) Move to the last blank line in the page.
3) Go to the Actions using View Actions.
4) Go to the properties of the Action you want to move to the new Category.

    Change the following properties:
          Promoted to Yes
          PromotedCategory to Category4.
*Category 4 to 10 are available in the NAV 2009 SP1, other than the standard categories like New, Report and Report.
          PromotedIsBig to Yes/No(as required)

5) Go to the Page properties and change the PromotedActionCategoriesML property value like below:
     ENU=New,Process,Report,New Category

First three values should be same like New, Process, Report and from there you can give your own name. If you change these values standard page Categories will be changed.

Run the page in RTC and see the result. You will find a new Category with "New Category" which has your action.

NAV 2009, 2009 SP1 and 2009 R2 in Same Machine Continued...

Hi all,

As promised in earlier post  that I will try to figure out the way to run classic report from Role Tailored client which is not installed on my machine.
One of my post  I explained that from where Role Tailored client find the path of classic client, I am just using that.
My machines have NAV 2009 SP1 Installed. I went to registry editor (regedit.exe) to find the key where the information of classic client in stored.

As you can see in the screen shot above (FOR WIN 7) that the information about classic client is stored in Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CurrentVersion\App Paths\finsql.exe
Go to File & select Export and save the registry file on desktop with Name say NAV Classic for NAV 2009 SP1. Now open the file in notepad.

The selected line shows the path of finsql that need to start when we execute a report whose RTC Layout is not created.
Let’s change the file and make changes for other versions (NAV 2009 & NAV 2009 R2) classic default Path.
I saved the file with name NAV Classic for 2009 & NAV Classic for 2009 R2 and here how they looks.

Let’s create a new Report in NAV 2009 R2 say Test Report and try to run that report from RTC.
As expected I got the error.

Now let’s add information for classic client in Registry for NAV 2009 R2. For this just double click the registry file that we have created for NAV 2009 R2.
An Warning will appear, click yes.

Now let’s again try to run that report. (during this operation the RTC Client should be closed).

And it’s done.

You can restore the path of default version but just clicking on the registry file that we have saved in the first step.
Thanks & Regards,
Saurav Dhyani

NAV 2009, 2009 SP1 and 2009 R2 in Same Machine

Hi all,

After Microsoft Released NAV 2009 Three Tier Architecture, we find issues while testing RTC on a version which is not installed.

Most of us uninstall current version and install the required version just for testing purpose.

I thought of creating multiple services for NAV 2009, NAV 2009 SP1 and NAV 2009 R2 in same machine with diffrent port numbers, so that we can run RTC also whenever required.

My Machine have NAV 2009 SP1 installed and i copied the Classic, Service and RoleTailored Client folder on my C Drive for Other two Versions.

I have created two Folders NAV2009 & NAV2009R2 inside "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\60".

For Creating Service for NAV 2009 i used the command-

SC CREATE MicrosoftDynamicsNAV2009 binpath= "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\60\NAV2009\Service\Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Server.exe" start= auto obj= "NT Authority\NetworkService" type= own

For Creating Service for NAV 2009 R2 i used the command-

SC CREATE MicrosoftDynamicsNAV2009R2 binpath= "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\60\NAV2009R2\Service\Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Server.exe" start= auto obj= "NT Authority\NetworkService" type= own

The Ports numbers i changed in CustomSetting.config file of three Services are-

Version Port Number
NAV 2009 6046 & 6047
NAV 2009 SP1       7046 & 7047
NAV 2009 R2 8046 & 8047

And after starting each service i Ran the .exe file from each RoleTailored Client Folder, which gives an error in the start where is says that version does not match, this is because it tries to connect to Default Port.

Once we change the port number it connect to the service.

* Remember
1) I have used the service Logon Credentials to "NT Authority\NetworkService" and it will only work if the you have created the Network Service on the database you want to connect and set its schema to $ndo$navlistener.
For more information how to do that read the post here.

2) The RTC client will work fine but only for RTC objects, i mean to say that if you have any report which is not developed for RTC Client, you will not be able to run it (beacause while opening a classic report from RTC,it looks in the registry for the path of classic client, which will be set to default for the version that is installed.)

3) FOR windows 7 User Please Run Command Prompt as RUN AS ADMINSTRATOR.

I will try to find a work around for the same and will post again.

Types Of Pages in NAV 2009 and Later...

Hi all,

I figured out that lot of us find issues while designing Pages. So i thouht why not start writing about Pages.

Lets see different types of Pages in this Post and Later on in other posts we can discuss how to create them and transform them.

Diffrent Types of Pages avilable in NAV 2009 and Later are -
1)   Card.
2)   List.
3)   RoleCenter.
4)   CardPart.
5)   ListPart.
6)   Document.
7)   Worksheet.
8)   ListPlus.
9)   ConfirmationDialog.
10) NavigatePage.

Card Type Page is Same as Card-Type Form.
Example of a Card Type Page -

List Type Page is Same as Tabular Type Form.
Example of a List Type Page-

Role center Page is the page which we see when we start Role Tailored Client.
Example of a Typical Role Center Page -

CardPart Page
A Card Part page is used in a FactBox on another page to view or edit additional fields associated with a selected entity in the page. The following illustration shows an example of using a Card Part page on a List page that displays sales orders. In the FactBox on the right, a CardPart page displays details about the customer that placed the selected sales order.
A Example of Card Part Page is -

ListPart Page
List Part Page is same as List Page. Similar to a List page, a List Part page displays content from a table in a list format. The difference is that you use the List part page as another page in a FactBox or as a part of the Role Center page. The following illustration shows a List Part page that is used in the Role Center for showing a list of the user's customers.
An Example of List Part Page is -

Document Page
A Document Page usually consists of two separate pages combined into one, with one page nested in the other. A Document Page is suitable for use when you want to display data from two tables that are linked together. This is the case, for example, with sales orders, which have two source tables: Sales Header and Sales Lines.
An Example of Document Type Page is -

Worksheet
Worksheet page type for creating worksheet or journal task pages. The Worksheet page consists of a single grid in the content area and a section at the bottom with details about the selected grid line or totals for the grid.
An Example of Worksheet Type Page is -

ListPlus
A ListPlus Page is Like a Card Page having multiple Tabs.
An Example of List Plus Page is -

ConfirmationDialog
A Confirmation Dialog Page is a page which ask for user for Yes or NO. we can see a confirmation dialog page while selecting a customer in the sales order, and the customer credit limit is checked.
An Example of Conformation Dialog Page is -

NavigatePage
A Navigate Page is used for navigation of Document Page. we use these type of page while navigating the posted entries.
An Example of Navigate Page is -

If you find the information about pages helpful then please comment so that i can go ahead and post other articles related to creating pages in Role Tailored Client.

Downgrade 2009 sp1 objects into 5.x or older databases.

Hi all,

Last week I required to do some customization on 5.x database that i have already done on 2009 SP1. It consist of multiple tables and Reports so i was frusted that i have to do it again for 5.x as i cannot just import the objects of 2009 SP1.

While looking for some solution on the web, i find out that Mr. Rashed Amini have developed a tool which can downgrade objects from 2009 SP1 to 5.x and older versions of navision.

I used the tool and everything worked fine. What this tool does is  remove the 2009 specific areas out of the text file and then importing them into 5.0 or older executables.you can try and test the tool. You can find the tool on Rashed Amini Blog here here (Updated on 16-11-2015).

Thanks To +Preslav Velkov for the Updated Link.

Data port with Headers

Hi all,

Most of time customer requires data from Navision, but they also request to have headers in the output.

We create a dataport but the problem occurs while having headers for the values.

Let’s see how we can do this-

Create a new dataport for Customer Table which will export Customer No., Name, City and Contact.
Once you are done with creation of dataport and adding dataport fields, go to OnPreDataItem().

Note’s in Navision 2009 RTC

Hi all,

While trying to figure out new features in Navision 2009 RTC I figured out a new feature called Notes/Links.

In Navision 2009 RTC, you will find a system part called as Notes.

Let’s see how we can use this.
Below is the image which shows a list of Sales order in Role Tailored Client and you can see a note window in the right hand side.

As soon as user opens an existing order or creates a new order, he/she can put his comments about the same and notify the user whose windows login is synchronized in the database.

As I opened a sales order, I can see a link for creating a new note in the right hand panel (Fact Box).
As soon as user clicks on the link to create a new note, he get a window opened which ask for certain information.
1) Your message/ comments.
2) User Id whose you want to send the notification.
3) A Boolean for Notify.

User select one of the user from the list and click on the notify Boolean and then save the note.
When the user login to its role center client, he can view all such notification on my notification page (part).

When user clicks on the link in my notification, he/she will directly redirect to the particular document.

This information can be printed in the Reports as well by some coding. we will see how to do that in next post.
Normally this information gets stored in a table called Record Link (2000000068).

URL 1 in this table stores the Link for the corresponding page and the message is stored in the Note Field as BLOB.

Show only Date not Date and Time in RTC Reports?

Hi all,
Most of the time client requires only date to be printed in the report, say for the shipment date.
But when we create the report in RTC and set the dataset field for the shipment date we get data and time.

The date in RTC Report shows date and time and that is the standard format.

If you want to show only date then we need to use the Format Property.

Example
Then in Page body click on the expression of the text box which says  “=SalesLine_ShipmentDate” and convert it to =FORMAT(SalesLine_ShipmentDate,"Short Date").

This will only show date.

How to Start Navision Application Server?

Hi all,

We always face issues while using NAS.
Lets discuss how we can install, configure and use Navision Application Server (NAS).

Go to Server Folder in the installation disk of the Navison version for which you want to start the Navision Application server.

Install the server on the disk.

This will create a service, go to services.msc to change the startup parameter of the service and use an administrative account to start the service.

RTC Report Development 2

Hi all,

If you havent read the part first then read it here.

Now when you created the sugggestion layout you can see the Red Dots in the Report body. For being specific in the table details of the first table in the Page Body.

The most part of an RTC Report is the Page Header, we all face issues in this.

Let's discuss what happens when we say suggest layout.

RTC Report Development 1

Hi all,

we all have some known and unkown issues while creating a Report For Role Tailored Client.
we will try to create a standard report by deleting its Layout and creating a new RDLC Layout from Scratch.

I have saved Standard Report 406 Purchase - Invoice as 5000 Purchase - Invoice 1.
Then i deleted its existing layout by using Tools->Delete Layout.

Now lets create the Layout from Scratch.
Now lets see what Layout suggestion suggest for this report, by using Tools -> Create Layout Suggestion.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV Classic client was opened from an untrustworthy component. Contact your system administrator.

Hi all,

A Comman error faced while trying to Run a Report From Role Tailored Client (a report with no layout defined), it try to start the Report Engine from classic Client.

It can happen that after updating RTC, you end up with a version of RTC which is not compatible with the default classic client. In this case you will typically get this error message when trying to run the report.

First of All you need to find the build of classic and Role tailored client. The Build for both should be same.
Following screen shows how to check the build for both client.

If the build is diffrent you need to udate the Build using this link (require Partner/Customer source login).

If the build is same then we need to find out from where does RTC find the classic client for running classic reports?

RTC finds the location of Finsql.exe in this place in registry: (can be opened by typing regedit in RUN)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\
Check the value for Default and Path, that should be the exact location where the classic and role tailored client is installed.

So if you have any of the issues above, make sure that the classic client in this folder matches the version of RTC.

Starting the RoleTailored Client from a Command Prompt

Hi all,

we all face situations where clients ask for some specific requirement as per user, as in he want that user cannot see anything other than a certain page or something like this. By using command line parameters we can achieve that.

You can start the RoleTailored client at a command prompt. By adding command-line parameters, you can:

Start the RoleTailored client with a profile other than the default profile.
Configure a profile.
Start the RoleTailored client with a language other than the default language.
Start the RoleTailored client with client settings other than the default client settings.
Start the RoleTailored client and open the specified page.
Start the RoleTailored client and open the specified report.

To run the RoleTailored client at a command prompt, open a command-prompt window and navigate to the RoleTailored client directory. The default location is: Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\60\RoleTailored Client

The executable name is: Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Client.exe

You can also start the RoleTailored client from the address bar in a browser or from a Run window using the same options. To start the RoleTailored client from a browser, type DynamicsNAV://<Server/ServerInstance>/<Company>/

Command-Line Parameters

You can use the following parameters when you start the RoleTailored client at a command prompt.

-?                         Displays this list of parameters.
URL                         Opens the RoleTailored client to a particular page or with a particular report.
-profile: id          Starts the RoleTailored client with the specified profile.

-language: id           Starts the RoleTailored client with the specified language.
-settings: file          Starts the RoleTailored client with the specified settings file.

-failurestacktrace    Sends the stack trace for the RoleTailored client to Windows Clipboard.

-disablepersonalization       users are not able to personalize.

-configure              Starts the RoleTailored client in configuration mode. Use configuration mode to configure
                               a profile.

The best one I find is  -?

It tells you about all the options we can have in RTC while running from command line. And at the same time it gives you example of all the commands discussed above.

Output when we run the command prompt parameter -?.

These commands can be used to create shortcuts for RTC with the parameter discussed above and the user will get what he wants, when he start RTC with the Shortcuts.

User ID and password are invalid.try again?

Hi all,

If you get “User ID and password are invalid.try again?” when starting RTC you need to first check that you can login to database in the classic client.

Reason for the Error

Windows Login is not synchronized with Database.
You are trying to connect a database which does not have your windows Login.

Resolution

Try to open database in Navision Classic Client with Windows Authentication.
If it fails open database with Database Authentication.
Click Tools, Security, Windows Login.
Create windows login, set a Role and Synchronize the Login.

Now try to connect Classic client with windows authentication.
If you are able to login then try to open Role Tailored client.

If you still get same error check the database name in CustomSettings.config file.
(c:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\60\Service\CustomSettings.config)

If it doesn’t to connect to the database start SQL server manager and verify that the windows user have permission to login and use the NAV database.

Change Drill Down in the Page?

Hi all,

A freind of mine asked me yesterday that one of his client want to change the Drop Down option in RTC Page.

As shown in image below, and client says that when he want to choose item No. he don't want No.,Description,Base Unit of Measure,Bill of Materials,Unit Price.

Insted of it he want No.,No. 2,Description,Unit Price,Inventory Posting Group,Vendor No.

Yes this can be changed.

Goto the source Table of that page which is getting opened during drop down, in our case its item table.
Design the table and from the view menu you can access the Field Group as shown in picture below.

Here you can set the DropDown Menu as per customer requirment.

Below is the image that shown the changes i have done on the same.

Save the changes in the table and start RTC to see changes in the Drop Down Menu.

Finally we have achieved what we wanted.

There are somethings to remember -

1) It will change the DropDown for all the places where item will get lookup.
2) You cannot or i should say should not change the name of the Property, that is HARD CODED as DropDown. Any name other than this will not work.

Thanks,
Saurav Dhyani.
